Shoppers Guide
Finding the right travel trailer shouldn’t feel overwhelming. At Salem RV, we make it easy to explore a wide selection of lightweight travel trailers designed for flexibility, comfort, and value. Whether you’re planning weekend getaways, extended road trips, or your first RV purchase, our inventory offers dependable options that are easy to tow and built for real-world use. Lightweight travel trailers are one of the most popular RV categories for a reason. They can be towed by a wider range of vehicles, including SUVs and light-duty trucks, while still offering the essential features you need for a comfortable experience on the road. From compact single-axle campers to larger bunkhouse floorplans for families, these trailers are designed to maximize space without adding unnecessary weight.
Drive:
You will be driving your “rig” everywhere - to town, to the store, to the National Park - that means you’ll always have your stuff with you, but also means you’ll always have to be “ready to move” (unless you plan to tow a vehicle behind).
Tow
: You can drop your rig wherever and go anywhere with your tow vehicle as normal. Wherever you go, though, you have to come back and pick up your rig to move somewhere else, so you’ll need to plan day trips accordingly.

Class A:
You will have all (or at least most) of the comforts of home as you travel with luxury options available. Travel in style! It might feel like you’re driving a bus, so make sure you’re comfortable with that. You might want to consider towing a vehicle behind your motorhome to give you more flexibility at your destinations. There are just some places a big rig can’t go!
Class B:
You will be able to drive your portable tiny home virtually anywhere. You want need to worry about finding a place to park or any of the other challenges of big rigs. Make sure you’re comfortable driving and living in tight quarters. One of the most flexible and popular options in the market!
Class C:
This is a great option for you if you want a driveable option that is not a big rig but has more space and sleeping options than a Class B. There are still some places you won’t be able to get to or through, so you’ll need to plan your trips accordingly.
Gas:
Regular gas is readily available throughout the US and Canada and is suitable for shorter drives where you’re not necessarily in a hurry and on flat or slightly hilly terrain.
Diesel:
Diesel engines have more power and get better mileage per gallon, so if you’re planning on long road trips, need to ensure you can travel at highway speeds, or you’re heading to the mountains, this is definitely an option you should consider. Diesel vehicles also have important safety features such as engine brakes to help you drive in very hilly or mountainous terrain - that’s why the truckers use diesel!
One thing to be aware of is that you will need to always be on the lookout for diesel fuel stations that have bays that you can get into and out of - look for truck stops! On backcountry trips, you’ll want to make sure you plan ahead and keep an eye on the fuel gauge to ensure you can get to the next diesel fuel station

If you don't know your exact vehicle, just pick the type(s) of vehicle you might consider towing with to see the next options
If you know your exact vehicle, but are not sure how much it can tow, we recommend using our tow guide - use the options to find the vehicle you have or plan to look for.
The tow guide will tell you how much that vehicle can safely tow. Make a note and come back here to pick the type of vehicle and the weight in the next question. Please note the disclaimers - we've added in a certain amount of passenger and cargo weight.
If you know your options are different than those standard amounts, review your vehicle information carefully to ensure you're comfortable with how much RV weight you can safely tow.
If your tow vehicle allows you to tow heavier weights, that means you can save on gas mileage, load it up with more cargo/passengers, or possibly consider an RV that has higher quality interiors and frame which add weight.
Weight Considerations
Each tow vehicle has a number of factors that play into how much you can safely tow. We recommend using our tow guide - use the options to find your vehicle and it will help you with that. Please note the disclaimers - we’ve added in a certain amount of passenger and cargo weight.

A bumper pull hitch is the simplest hitching type and the most common. You will have all of your truck bed for additional storage (with weather protection if you have a cover) although this additional cargo needs to be included in your weight considerations. Some drivers find that a travel trailer is like any other trailer with regard to driving, maneuverability and backing into tight camping spots, while others find that a Fifth Wheel hitch gives them more flexibility. If you’re towing with a bumper pull, you should consider making sure you have all the recommended safety equipment such as sway bars to prevent cross-winds from swaying or even flipping your trailer.
A Fifth Wheel hitch is a specialty hitch that can be quite expensive because they have many features and need to be matched to your truck/trailer for leveling and bed fit. (NOT SUV, VANS, etc.) A fifth wheel hitch is installed in the bed of your truck. It can be removed, but generally takes up the majority of the bed space when it is installed and you’re towing. This is generally considered a safer towing type than a bumper pull because of how the weight is distributed, closer to the truck. It also is regarded by many as being easier to hook up, maneuver, and back into complicated camping sites with more flexibility. Some states allow for riders to ride inside a fifth wheel while you are traveling.
